Exciting changes are happening at Brookfield Primary Academy!

We are delighted to announce that all pupils in Key Stage 2 will be learning Spanish as part of our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum.

Spanish is one of the world's most widely spoken languages and is the official language in 20 countries, with over 500 million people speaking it worldwide. Learning Spanish opens the door to new cultures, traditions and ways of communicating, helping our pupils become confident global citizens.

To support our language learning, we will be using the Language Angels programme to deliver engaging, high-quality weekly Spanish lessons. This exciting scheme provides children with a structured and interactive approach to learning a new language through songs, games, stories, speaking, listening, reading and writing activities.

Learning a foreign language is an important part of a child's education. It helps to develop communication skills, improves memory and problem-solving abilities, builds confidence and encourages curiosity about the wider world. It also promotes respect for different cultures and prepares children for future learning and opportunities beyond primary school.

We are excited to begin this journey and look forward to seeing our pupils develop a love of languages while having fun learning Spanish.

Curriculum

Intent

At Brookfield Primary Academy, we aim to inspire all Key Stage 2 pupils to develop a love of languages through learning Spanish in a way that is engaging, enjoyable and meaningful. Our Spanish curriculum fosters curiosity about language, broadens pupils' understanding of different cultures and traditions, and develops their confidence in communicating with others. Through learning Spanish, pupils gain valuable linguistic skills while developing respect for the diverse world around them.

Implementation

All Key Stage 2 classes receive a weekly Spanish lesson using the Language Angels programme. Beginning in Year 3, pupils are introduced to Spanish phonics, vocabulary and basic grammar through a carefully sequenced curriculum. Lessons are interactive and engaging, incorporating songs, stories, games, speaking and listening activities, reading and writing tasks, and opportunities to revisit previously learnt vocabulary.

As pupils progress through Key Stage 2, they develop the four key language skills:

Listening
Speaking
Reading
Writing

Children also learn about Spanish culture and traditions, helping them to appreciate similarities and differences between communities around the world. The curriculum is designed to build knowledge progressively, enabling pupils to communicate with increasing confidence and accuracy.

Impact

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will be able to:

listen attentively to spoken Spanish and respond appropriately;
explore the sounds and patterns of the Spanish language through songs, rhymes and stories;
link the spelling, pronunciation and meaning of words and phrases;
take part in simple conversations by asking and answering questions;
express opinions and respond to the opinions of others;
speak and write using familiar vocabulary, phrases and simple sentence structures.

Our curriculum regularly revisits and builds upon previously taught vocabulary and grammar to strengthen pupils' long-term memory and confidence. By learning high-frequency vocabulary, verbs, connectives and simple grammatical structures, pupils become increasingly able to create their own sentences independently.

Through our Spanish curriculum, pupils leave Brookfield Primary Academy with a secure foundation in the language, an appreciation of another culture and the confidence and enthusiasm to continue their language learning journey at secondary school and beyond.

MFL Day - 26th September 2025

Key Stage 2 children had a fantastic time celebrating European Day of Languages on 26th September! All classes took part in an exciting Spanish dance workshop, where they learned the Paso Doble and even had a go at some Flamenco steps — it was great fun!

Throughout the day, children took part in a variety of language-themed activities linked to the languages they are learning. Year 3 and Year 5 enjoyed a delicious French breakfast, while others got creative building Eiffel Towers out of art straws. Using iPads, pupils researched interesting facts about Spain and France, and even took part in Maths lessons delivered in French and Spanish.

Children also had the opportunity to read books in different languages, helping them appreciate the richness and diversity of European cultures. It was a wonderful day filled with learning, creativity, and fun!
