Science
Intent
At Brookfield Primary Academy, we want every child to Achieve, Belong and Thrive through a science curriculum that inspires curiosity, creativity and a lifelong love of discovery.
We aim to develop pupils’ understanding of natural phenomena and nurture their ability to question, reason and investigate the world around them.
Through carefully planned teaching of biology, chemistry and physics, children gain the scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding needed to make sense of their everyday experiences and the wider world.
Our intent is for pupils to recognise the relevance of science in shaping our personal, national and global future, and to see themselves as scientists who can make a difference.
Implementation
Science at Brookfield is taught through engaging, enquiry-based learning, where children are encouraged to ask questions, plan investigations and develop their understanding through practical exploration.
Lessons are structured to build on prior learning, following the ACET Long Term Plan, which ensures progression and full coverage of the National Curriculum.
‘Working Scientifically’ is embedded within all units so that pupils develop investigative skills alongside their growing knowledge of scientific concepts.
Teachers use the ACET Science Skills Progression Grid to guide the teaching of skills and vocabulary, ensuring continuity across year groups and preparation for Key Stage 3.
Cross-curricular links, enrichment opportunities and real-life contexts help pupils appreciate the role of science in everyday life and its importance for their future.

Impact
By the time pupils leave Brookfield, they will:
-
Have developed a secure understanding of key scientific concepts and processes.
-
Be confident in planning, carrying out and evaluating investigations.
-
Use scientific language accurately to explain their thinking.
-
Understand how science influences and improves our lives and environment.
Through science, our pupils Achieve by mastering key knowledge and skills, Belong by working collaboratively as scientists, and Thrive as curious, motivated learners ready for the next stage of their education.
If you have any questions about how SCIENCE is taught within school or how to further support your children at home please do not hesitate to contact Miss Dunning (SCIENCE Lead).
