Welcome to Y5 Cherry Class! 

 

 

We are looking forward to a fantastic Autumn Term 2026, with lots of exciting activities planned.

Our PE day will be Tuesday and this term Cherry Class will be having their swimming lessons.  Please ensure your child has their full swimming  kit with them on that day.

Every day: planners, reading books and water bottles.

Our Literacy Texts for this half term are:

 

 Text: Wizard of Once

Through our class novel, The Wizard of Once, pupils will develop their reading fluency, expression and appropriate pace when reading aloud. They will practise a range of Year 5 reading comprehension skills, including retrieving and locating information, making inferences, predicting what might happen next, exploring unfamiliar vocabulary and summarising important ideas. Children will also identify themes within the text and consider how the author’s choice of language, organisation and structure help to create meaning and engage the reader.

Topic: Properties of Materials  

We will investigate the different properties of materials and explore how these characteristics determine the ways in which materials are used. Children will identify and compare a range of properties and consider which materials are most suitable for particular purposes. They will investigate electrical conductivity, explore which substances are soluble and compare how easily different materials dissolve. Pupils will also explore thermal insulation and investigate which materials are most effective at reducing the transfer of heat. Through practical experiments, children will make careful observations, record and compare results, and use scientific evidence to support their conclusions. 

               

 

Topic: Tudors  

This term, we will delve into the fascinating world of Tudor England. Children will explore significant events and key historical figures, including Henry VII, Henry VIII, Mary I and Elizabeth I. They will investigate themes such as power, religion and everyday life, while considering different interpretations of the Tudor period. Pupils will explore questions such as how the Tudors transformed England and what life was like for people during this time. Through historical enquiry, children will develop their ability to use evidence, understand chronology and approach the past from the perspective of a historian. 

 

 

  

Medium: Drawing  

Artist Study: Pablo Picasso 

Children will develop their drawing skills by studying the work and distinctive style of Pablo Picasso. They will explore how Picasso used shape, line and perspective to create expressive and striking portraits. Pupils will then experiment with these techniques and use them to produce their own Tudor-themed artwork inspired by Picasso, bringing together their historical knowledge and artistic creativity. 

Topic: Sharing Information 

Children will investigate how information is shared and how different systems are used to support us in our everyday lives. They will learn about a variety of systems, explore how computer systems operate and interact with people, and understand how information can be transferred between different devices. Pupils will also consider how technology enables people to communicate and collaborate more effectively, as well as exploring the importance of sharing information in a safe and responsible way. 

We will be strengthening children’s Spanish pronunciation and speaking abilities through phonics activities, helping them to identify and pronounce a range of Spanish sounds more accurately. Pupils will learn vocabulary connected to the seasons and use their new words in simple conversations. They will also explore different ice cream flavours, using Spanish to express their likes and dislikes and construct simple sentences. 

Our focus will be on building children’s confidence, accuracy and fluency with number. Pupils will deepen their understanding of place value and develop their ability to read, write, compare and order numbers. They will then use this knowledge when working with addition and subtraction, applying a variety of efficient strategies to solve calculations and problems. As the term progresses, children will develop their multiplication and division skills, improving their recall of multiplication facts and applying these skills to calculations and practical, real-life situations.
