Cherry (Y4 Mr Burton)
Welcome to Y4 Cherry Class!

We are looking forward to a fantastic Spring Term 2026, with lots of exciting activities planned.

Our PE day will be Wednesday and this term Cherry Class will be having their swimming lessons. Please ensure your child has their full swimming kit with them on that day.
Every day: planners, reading books and water bottles.
Our Literacy Texts for this half term are:
'The Wild Robot' by Peter Brown and 'How to Train your Dragon' by Cressida Cowell.

Children: Please remember to complete your four reads every week and earn extra Dojo Points!
In Science, we will be learning about states of matter. We will compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases; observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled; identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperature. Throughout the unit, children will develop their scientific skills through recording findings using simple scientific language, drawings, labelled diagrams, keys, bar charts, and tables. They will also set up simple practical enquiries, comparative and fair tests, and make careful observations and accurate measurements.

In History, we are studying the Anglo-saxons and Scots. We will explore how life in Britain changed as a result of the Anglo-Saxon and Scots invasions, recognising similarities and differences. By analysing historical evidence and artefacts, we will find out about life in Anglo Saxon villages and their culture and beliefs, and the legacy of the Anglo Saxons evident in place names and features.

In Art this term, we will focus on developing collage techniques. We will select materials to create a collage based on the work of Mark Hearld, inspired by the nature of Britain. By tearing, carefully cutting, overlapping and using bright, bold patterns and colours, we will showcase our developing skills.

In Computing, we will explore repetition in shapes, using a screen turtle to create letters, patterns and repeats. We will learn how to create our own programs with a loop to develop repeating shapes.
In Spanish this term, we will focus on the vocabulary of shapes, colours and adjectives to describe shapes.

In Maths, we will further develop our understanding of multiplication and division, moving on to length and perimeter, fractions and decimals later in the term. Year 4 has a heavy focus on committing multiplication and division facts to memory, with quick recall tested later on in the year as part of a formal assessment process. To give your child the best chance of success, please ensure that they spend time each week practising their multiplication tables. The following websites are available for use to help your child develop confidence and speed.
