Art
Intent
At Brookfield Primary Academy, we aim to develop all children's confidence and love of art by exposing them to a wide range of skills and techniques as well as a range of styles and artists. We aim to equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to create their own art and also to appreciate how art has shaped history and how it continues to enrich our lives.
Implementation
Essential Skill Progression
Children will be taught a wide range of art and design skills and techniques that they will continue to develop throughout their time at the academy.
Artist Study
Every term, children will study one artist in detail. This artist will link to either the history, geography or science learning of their year group. The children will learn about the life and career of the artist, study the artist’s work, explore the materials and techniques used by the artist and create their own piece of art inspired by the artist. Children will learn to critique both their own work and the work of others, and to describe similarities and differences between the different practices and disciplines that they have studied.
Art in Foundation
Children in Foundation are taught Art through the 'Expressive Arts and Design' strand.
Children are taught skills needed for Art through focussed activities and carefully planned provision. They are taught to use a range of small tools including paintbrushes and scissors. Children are exposed to a wide range of materials which they have access to throughout the day. We encourage children to communicate effectively to explain the techniques they have used, using appropriate vocabulary.
Impact
Our Art curriculum ensures that all children develop confidence, creativity and a strong sense of self-expression. By the time children leave our school, they will have built a secure understanding of key artistic skills and techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture and design.
Pupils are encouraged to take pride in their work, reflect on their ideas and evaluate their progress. They develop resilience by experimenting, taking risks and understanding that mistakes are part of the creative process.
Children gain knowledge of a diverse range of artists, designers and craft makers, enabling them to make connections and be inspired in their own work. They are able to talk about art using appropriate vocabulary and explain their choices.
Through our Art curriculum, pupils leave with:
- A passion for creativity and self-expression
- The ability to think critically and evaluate their work
- An appreciation of different cultures and artistic styles
- The confidence to share and celebrate their ideas
Our aim is for all children to see themselves as artists and to carry these creative skills with them into the future.
