Welcome to Year 6 with Miss Sales and Miss Dickinson!


This half term is packed with exciting learning opportunities across the curriculum. Below is an overview of what your child will be learning.


Reading

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne
This powerful novel links closely to our main history topic of World War II and will help pupils develop empathy, inference skills and deeper understanding of historical context.

English

Core Text: Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce
Across the half term, children will develop their writing skills through a range of genres:

  • Diary entry

  • Narrative writing

  • Setting description

  • Letter writing

  • Advice piece

There will be a strong focus on vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation and writing for purpose and audience.

Maths

This half term we will be covering:

  • Ratio

  • Algebra

  • Decimals

  • Fractions

  • Percentages

Lessons will include reasoning, problem solving and opportunities to apply maths skills in different contexts.


Science

Topic: Classification
Children will learn about:

  • Conditions for life

  • Grouping organisms

  • Classifying animals

  • Classifying plants

  • Using classification keys to classify organisms

History

Topic: World War II
Key areas of study include:

  • Where WWII fits in British history

  • Life during the Blitz

  • Winston Churchill

  • The Battle of Britain

  • How the war changed the lives of ordinary people

  • Teaching World War Two (WW2) at KS2 - Lessons and Resources | Keystage  history


Art

Children will create collages linked to World War II, focusing on Blitz scenes and developing skills in texture, layering and composition.


P.E.

Gymnastics
Pupils will develop balance, control, strength and flexibility through a range of gymnastic activities.


ICT

Scratch Programming
Children will learn how to use variables to create more complex programs and games.

 


MFL – Spanish

Children will:

  • Describe places in Spanish

  • Learn about the geography of Spain


Music

Children will be learning and performing the WWII song “We’ll Meet Again” by Vera Lynn, focusing on pitch, rhythm and performance skills.

This half term’s themes include:

  • How do plants and animals reproduce?

  • How can I be a great citizen?

  • Why is money important?


RE

We’ll be exploring the big question:

  • Why do Hindus want to be good?

After-School Booster Sessions

After-school booster sessions will continue this half term. Children are very welcome to sign up if they wish to attend:

  • Monday: Reading

  • Wednesday: Maths

  • Thursday: Writing


We are really looking forward to a busy and exciting half term in Year 6!


Key Dates and Homework

  • PE Days: Thursday – please ensure PE kits are in school on this day.
  • Homework: 
    • Reading – 20 minutes, 4 times a week (log in your planner).
    • Maths and English – set on Friday, due in the following Friday.
    • Spellings – tested every Friday.
