Welcome to Year 6 – Autumn Term
Welcome back to an exciting new school year! Year 6 is a fantastic year filled with challenges, opportunities, and memorable experiences. This term, we will be diving into fascinating topics across the curriculum, developing our independence, and preparing for the journey to secondary school. Below you’ll find an overview of what we’ll be learning in each subject this autumn.
Reading
Our class text this term is Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman, which links closely to our science work on the human circulatory system. Through this gripping story, we’ll explore big questions about ethics, identity, and medical science.
English
We’ll develop our writing skills through a variety of genres:
- Poetry – crafting powerful poems using imagery and emotion.
- Balanced Arguments – debating important issues and writing to persuade.
- Diary Entries – stepping into a character’s shoes and capturing their thoughts.
- Internal Monologue – exploring what characters really think and feel.
- Narrative Writing – creating our own stories inspired by Skellig by David Almond.

Maths
We’ll be building strong number and problem-solving skills by working on:
- Place Value and understanding large numbers.
- Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division with fluency and reasoning.
- Fractions – including adding, subtracting and comparing.
- Converting Units – such as length, mass, and capacity.
- Ratio and Proportion – applying these to real-life problems.
Science
Our topic is Animals including Humans, focusing on:
- The circulatory system and how the heart, lungs and blood keep us alive.
- The impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on our health.
History
We’ll journey to Central America to discover The Maya civilization. We’ll learn about their achievements, daily life, writing, number systems and their impact on history.
Geography
Our geography work will focus on:
- Using compass points to describe locations and directions.
- Investigating land use and how human activity shapes the environment.
Art
- Painting inspired by the bold and colourful style of Andy Warhol.
- 3D Sculpture using clay, influenced by the work of Antony Gormley.
Design & Technology
We’ll explore frame structures, learning how to design and build strong, stable constructions.
PE
- Invasion Games – developing teamwork and strategy in football and matball.
- Dance – performing the powerful Haka, alongside netball to build skills and fitness.
Computing
- Communication and the Internet – learning how data travels and how to stay safe online.
- Web Page Creation – designing and building our own webpages.
RE
We’ll be exploring big questions:
- How do Christians live out their beliefs?
- Why do Christians believe Jesus was the Messiah?
Music
We’ll create atmospheric pieces inspired by The Mayan Rainforest, using rhythm and texture to bring the jungle to life.
RSHE
This term, we’ll think about the world around us and our place in it:
- Bias and Stereotypes – understanding how opinions are shaped and how to respect differences.
- Friendship and Belonging – exploring what it means to be British and how the internet affects our lives.
