Welcome to Year 6 with Miss Sales and Miss Dickinson!


This half term is packed with exciting learning opportunities across the curriculum. Below is an overview of what your child will be learning.

Reading

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne
This powerful novel links closely to our main history topic of World War II and will help pupils develop empathy, inference skills and deeper understanding of historical context.

English

Core Text: Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce
Across the half term, children will develop their writing skills through a range of genres:

  • Diary entry

  • Narrative writing

  • Setting description

  • Letter writing

  • Advice piece

There will be a strong focus on vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation and writing for purpose and audience.

Mathematics

We will focus on consolidating key calculation and reasoning skills in:

  • Decimals

  • Fractions

  • Percentages

  • Area and perimeter

Children will:

  • Solve multi-step problems

  • Apply learning to real-life contexts

  • Explain mathematical reasoning clearly

Science – Electricity

Children will:

  • Build and test electrical circuits

  • Understand how voltage affects components

  • Investigate conductors and insulators

  • Apply scientific enquiry skills through practical investigations

Design and Technology – Circuits and Switches

Linking with science learning, children will:

  • Design and create more complex electrical circuits

  • Build different types of switches

  • Evaluate and improve their designs

Geography – Power and Energy

Children will explore:

  • Where energy comes from

  • Renewable energy sources (e.g. wind, solar, hydro)

  • Non-renewable energy sources (e.g. coal, oil, gas)

  • The impact of energy use on the environment

Art – Sculpture (Clay)

Inspired by the work of Antony Gormley, children will:

  • Explore human form in sculpture

  • Use clay to create 3D sculptures

  • Develop shaping, carving and smoothing techniques

  • Evaluate their work and the work of others

 

PE – Fitness

This half term focuses on improving:

  • Endurance

  • Strength

  • Overall physical fitness

Children will take part in structured fitness activities and track personal improvement.

 

Computing – Spreadsheets

Children will be introduced to:

  • Entering data

  • Using simple formulas

  • Creating charts

  • Understanding how spreadsheets are used in real life

RE – Christianity

Key Question: What difference does the resurrection make to Christians?

Children will:

  • Learn about the Easter story

  • Explore Christian beliefs about life after death

  • Discuss how beliefs influence actions and choices

RSHE

Children will explore:

  • Why some people take drugs

  • How to find reliable health information

  • Basic life-saving awareness and how to respond in emergencies

Spanish

Children will learn:

  • Names of different countries

  • Holiday vocabulary

  • Easter-related language and traditions

After-School Booster Sessions

After-school booster sessions will continue this half term. Children are very welcome to sign up if they wish to attend:

  • Monday: Reading

  • Wednesday: Maths

  • Thursday: Writing

We are really looking forward to a busy and exciting half term in Year 6!

Key Dates and Homework

  • PE Days: Thursday – please ensure PE kits are in school on this day.
  • Homework: 
    • Reading – 20 minutes, 4 times a week (log in your planner).
    • Maths and English – set on Friday, due in the following Friday.
    • Spellings – tested every Friday.
