Year 5 will be filled with challenges, opportunities, and memorable experiences. This term, we will be diving into fascinating topics across the curriculum and developing our independence.

 

Dates to remember in Y5: 

  • PE is on Wednesday - full kit required
  • Homework (a piece of English and Maths) is set on Fridays and is due on the following Thursday. 
  • Spellings are set on a Monday and the test is the following Monday.
  • 4 weekly reads will be checked on a Friday.
  • Water bottles, reading books and diaries should be brought to school every day.  

🧺 Other Information

  • Library Day – Children will visit the library once a week to enjoy some reading for pleasure. 

  • Celebration Assembly – Every Friday we celebrate the amazing achievements of our class, including our Star of the Week!

Autumn 2 Learning 

 

Music – Rotherham Opera

This half-term, we are busy learning songs for the Rotherham Opera. Pupils will visit Magna and perform as part of a large opera group. This is a very exciting opportunity, and the children are thoroughly enjoying learning the songs and actions while preparing for the performance.

Reading 

The children have been really enjoying our class text, "Treason" a historical fiction (linked to our previous History topic - Tudors) by Berlie Doherty and we will be continuing with this text in Autumn 2.  We will also be having a weekly session looking at visual literacy, including poems, songs, videos and advertisements. 

In Autumn 2, some children will have the opportunity to work with the school’s library service as part of the reading project “Beyond the Book.” This is an excellent chance for pupils to work in a small group, fostering collaboration while developing their love of reading and strengthening their comprehension skills.

English 

This term, our class will be exploring the book The Boy at the Back of the Class. Through this text, we will develop our writing across a range of genres, including: persuasive writing, free writing to explore characters’ thoughts and feelings, letters, news broadcasts, speeches, and news features. These activities will help pupils develop their creativity, empathy, and ability to write for different purposes and audiences.

Maths 

 This half - term, we will be exploring fractions. Pupils will learn to find equivalent fractions, compare and order fractions, and convert improper fractions to mixed numbers. We will also focus on adding and subtracting fractions, including those with mixed numbers, helping pupils to develop their confidence and fluency with these key skills.

Each day we will have our daily arithmetic session and there will be countdown challenges to complete too. 

Regular practice of timetables will help with rapid recall and confidence in our maths lessons.

Science 

This term, we will be exploring the properties of materials. Pupils will investigate questions such as:

  1. What are the properties of different materials?

  2. How are materials used in everyday life?

  3. What is the best material for a spoon?

  4. Investigating solubility and hardness

  5. What are wires made of – and why?

  6. How are new materials invented?

  7. How can we use our knowledge to help Cadbury’s?

Through these investigations, pupils will develop their scientific enquiry skills, learn to compare and test materials, and understand how materials are chosen for different purposes in the real world.

 

Geography - Survival of the World

This term, we will be exploring the survival of the world. Pupils will study key concepts including:

  1. Understanding longitude and latitude

  2. Understanding time zones

  3. The importance of water on Planet Earth

  4. What happens to water in the water cycle

  5. The journey of a river

Through these lessons, pupils will develop their geographical knowledge, learn to interpret maps and data, and understand how water is essential to life on Earth.

 

ART

This half-term, we will be developing our painting skills by focusing on Tudor houses. Pupils will explore techniques such as brush control, mixing and blending colours, and adding detail and texture to their work. This project will also allow them to learn about historical architecture and use their creativity to interpret Tudor-style buildings through paint.

 

French 

 Pupils reinforce their knowledge of numbers 1 to 60, they learn to tell the time in French and use this to say what time they eat breakfast. They describe what they have to eat for breakfast and give their opinions on food. They describe what they eat for lunch at school. They learn how to use a French-English dictionary to find the meaning of unknown words. They learn how to use expressions of frequency. They extend their knowledge of how Christmas is celebrated in French-speaking countries.

 

Computing

Pupils will learn how to create short videos by working in pairs or groups. As they progress through this unit, they will be exposed to topic-based language and develop the skills of capturing, editing, and manipulating video. 

PE – Dance and Netball

This term in PE, pupils will be developing their dance skills and exploring movement, rhythm, and expression. They will also be playing netball, focusing on teamwork, passing, and game strategy to improve their fitness and coordination.

RSHE – Relationships and Online Safety

This term in RSHE, pupils will be learning about:

  • FR2 – Friends: understanding friendships and how to maintain positive relationships

  • OS3 – Strangers Online: staying safe when interacting with people online

  • OS4 – Personal Information: knowing what personal information is and how to keep it private

These lessons will help pupils develop healthy relationships, online safety awareness, and confidence in managing personal information.

 

RE – Islam in Britain

This term, pupils will explore what it is like to be a Muslim in Britain today. They will learn about beliefs, practices, and daily life, helping them to understand and respect different perspectives.

 

Autumn 1 Learning

 

Reading

This term we will be reading and creating some interesting writing inspired by the text, "Wizard of Once" by Cressida Cowell. We will be writing character descriptions, stories, poetry and more.

This Autumn term we will be focusing on Place Value, looking at numbers to 100,000, Roman Numerals, addition and subtraction and much more.

Science 

Our Science topic is Animals Including Humans. We will be learning about human development, the life process of animals, and the changes that occur as humans grow from childhood to adulthood.

History 

In History, we will be learning about the Tudors - who they were and the impact they had on Britain. We will look at how Henry V11 came to power (Battle of Bosworth), why Henry V111 broke away from the Catholic Church, why he was significant, what Elizabeth the First looked like and was Mary Queen of Scots a good Queen? 

We also have a trip to Bishops House to experience life in the Tudor times. The Schools Library Service will be visiting and carrying out a workshop on Tudors which will be interesting and hands on!

ART

Our skill this half-term is drawing. We will be studying the creative work of Picasso and drawing our own Picasso-style Tudor drawings!

French 

We will continue learning our numbers, classroom instructions and French phonics.

Computing 

Our first unit is all about sharing information using ICT. We will be learning about systems, transferring information and  working together. 

PE

We will be playing various invasion games, like football, matball and basketball. We will be learning out sportsmanship and collaboration. 

 

RSHE 

This half-term we will be discussing friends,feelings and the perfect body.

 

 

RE

We will be learning more about Christianity and thinking about what does it mean if Christians believe God is loving and Holy?
